Syed Abdul Rahim popularly known as Rahim Saab was a former Indian football player, coach and manager of the Indian national team. He was born on 17 August 1909 in Hyderabad. Rahim Saab was a school teacher before becoming a football player. Later he studied physical education and took charge of sports activities in schools.

In the year 1950, Rahim Saab became the coach of the Indian football team. Due to his coaching, the team got a lot of success. He has been called the ‘Architect of Modern Indian Football’. It is said that when Rahim Saab was the coach, the golden era of football was going on in India. Under his guidance, India won gold medals in the Asian Games held in 1952 and 1962. Under his leadership, the Indian football team also got a chance to play in the semi-finals of the Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics were held in Melbourne in the year 1956. India became the first Asian country to achieve this feat.
In 1962, when the Asian Games were being played in Jakarta, coach Syed Abdul Rahim was also battling cancer. The final match of the Indian team was to be played against the South Korean team. The team was very strong and two players of the Indian team were injured and the goalkeeper was ill. But for Rahim Saab, all three players entered the field to play the final. India won the match 2-1 and won the gold medal. In the year 1963, Syed Abdul Rahim said goodbye to the world. No one has broken Rahim Saab’s record till date in the last 60 years.
